How To Accurately Query The Customs Code Of A Product?

I believe that foreign trade friends are no strangers to HS coding! In our daily foreign trade business, whether we understand the tax refund rate of the product or fill in the bill of lading for customs clearance, we need to check the HS code of the product. In fact, HS code is a coordinated system of commodity classification that is used by many countries in the world. How is it classified and inquired?

International HS code

Harmonized System, refers to "Commodity Name and Coding System", abbreviated as HS. It is a commodity classification system developed by the World Customs Organization (WCO) in 1988. HS uses a six-digit coding system to divide all international trade commodities into 22 categories and 98 chapters. It is currently the most widely used international trade commodity classification catalog.

As a party to the "Convention on Harmonized Systems", China has adopted HS as the basic catalogue of China's "Import and Export Tariffs" and "Customs Statistics Commodity Catalog" since January 1, 1992. We can inquire under which specific category the commodity classification we are operating, that is to say, its essence is a commodity classification method. In order to adapt to the development of international trade and commodities, the World Customs Organization will make revisions every 4 to 6 years, so there are different revisions. According to the revision and change of HS, China will also make corresponding conversion adjustments to the catalog.

At present, there are more than 200 countries / regions in the world. And HS is used as an important basis in the process of foreign trade customs clearance.

The last few digits of the expanded HS code

Some foreign trade friends will ask, China also follows this HS code, but the code currently used in China is indeed 10 digits. Are the commodity codes we use the same as those used in other countries?

In fact, the HS code used by each country is different. The HS code allows each participating country to expand and sequel the latter codes according to the specific commodity classification of the country after the international 6-digit code. It can be seen that some countries use 8-bit codes for customs declaration and some countries have 11-bit codes.

What is the specific expansion of countries based on? In fact, it is classified according to the three aspects of the material, function and composition of the commodity. Different products will have different differences and classifications.

Next, we take coffee as an example to see how the 6-digit HS code is queried.

HS code query

When searching for a product code, you must first find a large category of chapters, and then follow the chapters to find the following catalog, which is a more detailed classification subheading.

Let's take a look at the UN Comtrade Database's product list, select the 12 version of the HS code, and search the product Coffee directly.

Then click into the directory under Chapter 09, you can see the 10 coding categories under Chapter 09, as shown below.

It can be seen that Coffee is under the category of 0901, and the other categories are not. We then enter this category and look for more detailed sub-categories below.

As shown in the screenshot above, mainly looking at the two sections of name and description, you can see that if it is unfrosted or decaffeinated coffee, it is a product under the code 090111.Check out the others, roasted and decaffeinated coffee is listed under the code 090122. Then the code 090190 belongs to others, including the skins of coffee beans and coffee substitutes.

One thing to note here is that the description of some products does not directly display your search terms, but its large category uses a description of the structure or composition of this product.

Finally, we can go to the HS code query website to verify the commodity code used in China's specific customs declaration.
